Values
The following values guide the goals and activitiesof the New York Work Exchange.
- Engaging in meaningful work is oftentimes the cornerstone of an individual's recovery from mental illness.
- Job placement and job retention must be made available to all recipients of mental health services.
- Vocational rehabilitation efforts need to be delivered more rapidly to individuals entering into the mental health system and be better integrated into mental health treatment.
- Efforts to employ persons with psychiatric disabilities in the competitive workforce must be linked to workforce development efforts directed at all disability groups and economically disadvantaged persons.
Major Goals and Activities
Goal: To help increase the number of recipients of mentalhealth services receiving employment services.
Project 1: GrantProcurement
The New York Work Exchange will provideconsultation and financial support for agencies to respond torequests for proposals (RFPs) emanating from federal, state, andcity agencies as well as foundations. The New York Work Exchangewill research funding opportunities on a regular basis and sendgrant alert notices to mental health and rehabilitationproviders. Every effort will be made to to work proactively withagencies interested in obtaining funds to initiate and/or expandtheir employment programs. The New York Work Exchange willunderwrite the cost of grant writing efforts for those agenciesthat require such support.
Goal: To help improve the quality and effectiveness ofexisting employment programs in New York City.
Project 2: Best Practices Seminars and Mentoring Services
The New York Work Exchange, incollaboration with existing organizations and agencies thatprovide training, will augment the quantity and quality oftraining offered by providing staff resources, curricula, andmentoring support. The New York Work Exchange will develop amentor faculty who will offer on-the-job coaching and support toparticipants of training seminars in order to better facilitatethe transfer and implementation of seminar information.
Goal: To facilitate the integration of employmentservices into clinical practice.
Project 3:Clinical/Vocational Grand Rounds
The New York Work Exchange, incollaboration with interested program staff at various agenciesthroughout the city, will bring together clinical and vocationalstaff to learn how work issues can be woven into thefabric of clinical treatment by sponsoring and administeringclinical/vocational grand rounds.
In addition to these three major goals, the New York WorkExchange will:
- Develop a computer database directory of employment programs available to individuals with psychiatric disabilities living in New York City.
- Offer consulting services to agencies interested in improving or enhancing existing employment programs and/or creating employment services with funds not currently directed toward employment efforts.
