Job Title: Employment Coordinator
Location: Jamaica, Queens One-Stop Center
Purpose: This position will serve participants in the New York WORKS project and will lead an employment team as well as advocate for employment services. The Employment Coordinator will assist consumers with the activities of the consumer including career planning, employment goal setting and short-term action plans focused on achieving mainstream competitive employment.
Supervision: The Program Director of New York Works supervises the Employment Coordinator. The Employment Coordinator may be supervised within the employment division of a local Community Service office of the Department of Labor and the NYC Program Coordinator.
Major Responsibilities:
Planning
- Assists with the Development of an employment plan development process.
- Works closely with the other team members on gathering the information necessary to help the consumer navigate the system.
- Promotes consumer choice and decision-making in the planning and implementation of employment plans.
- Creates linkages through the Employment Coordination Team between the short-term action plans and the long-term career goals developed with the Team and the development of the VESID (Vocational Rehabilitation) Individualized Plan for Employment.
- Applies best practices from research to services provided to participants such as rapid placement, place-train-support models, and individual placement and support models.
Coordination
- Coordinates consumer-directed services in cooperation with the other primary team members including the designated VESID vocational rehabilitation counselor and the designated Benefits Advisor.
- As desired by the consumer, invites other individuals to participate in the core team activities, including: DOL Project Liaison; SSA Project Liaison; mental health primary contact; other public mental health system providers involved with the individual; other significant people identified by the consumer, including family members or employer representatives.
- Assists consumers in gaining access to existing service systems by facilitating the referral, eligibility, planning and implementation processes.
- Leverages existing employment services available in the broader community and promotes access to both specialized and generic services that the individual requires to achieve mainstream competitive employment.
- Develops jobs, assists participants in finding jobs and matches individuals to jobs as needed.
- "Wraps-around" any existing employment services, offering complimentary resources from the employment coordination team.
- Coordinates activities with NY Works staff and partners to fulfill activities related to research and data collection.
Employment Supports
- Encourages the consumer through frequent contacts to continue participation in employment-oriented services.
- Organizes, provides or identifies employment support services for individuals in employment such as individual or group peer support or on-site or off-site follow-along.
- Assist consumers in accessing DOL employment services.
- Promotes an orientation to employment services that working is an expected role within the community and that it is a valued part of the recovery process.
- Promotes real world learning and actual experience in employment as a means to develop the role of a worker and achieve employment goals.
- Provides, directly or through community providers, mobile job support to employed participants.
- Serves as a liaison with employers, orients and educates employers, negotiates accommodations and provides workplace advocacy.
- Develops employment retention supports, e.g. problem-solving groups, frequent off-site contacts and the development of natural supports.

Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree and/or on the job experience in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Public Health, Business or other discipline related to the provision of employment services to individuals with disabilities. Applicant should have 2-4 years experience in providing employment-related services to individuals with mental illness, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS or other disabilities. Must possess excellent computer knowledge to maintain client records, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Knowledge of vocational rehabilitation, employment and training is essential; Bilingual/bicultural helpful. Individuals who have experience as consumers of mental health services and in providing peer counseling, advocacy and support are encouraged to apply.
