POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Benefits Advisor - New York WORKS

Grade 14

The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. has a full-time opening in the New York WORKS Social Security Initiative project. This position is funded through a grant from the Social Security Administration and is expected to continue through September 30, 2003, and possibly extended.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving ability, organizational skills and mathematical calculation proficiency. Ability to grasp details, learn and question rules and technical/bureaucratic procedures essential. Experience working with in a caring, supportive process. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Will consider less education combined with direct experience providing benefits advisement and counseling to individuals with disabilities. Knowledge of vocational rehabilitation, employment and training is preferred; Bilingual/bicultural helpful. Individuals who have experience as consumers of disability-related services and in providing peer counseling, advocacy and support are encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide benefits advisement to individuals with disabilities on Social Security work incentives and information on how earnings affect other resources such as Medicaid, Medicare and housing subsidy as part of the New York WORKS Research Demonstration project, Employment Coordination Team. Works with team to assist individuals to work while maintaining essential benefits.
