- NAMI-NYC Metro will be presenting results from the New York Work Exchange 3- year project "Ways to Work" at its general meeting scheduled for October 12th at the Community Church of NY located at 40 East 35th Street, Lower level from 6 - 8 PM. - NRI: the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) Research Institute (NRI) explores the issues related to the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). With funding from SAMHSA, NRI created these web pages to provide all stakeholders with a comprehensive overview of EBPs, including the latest research and activities surrounding adoption, implementation, and sustainability. - Urban Justice Center is providing the fall session of the Mental Health Consumer Advocacy Course through its Mental Health Project to begin Thursday, October 29th. Kellogg Foundation has grant opportunities in adult or continuing education, African American populations, aging, agriculture or food, community development, computer science, education, and healthcare. News Briefs/Events: - Arts of Healing Conference presented by New York City Voices will take place Saturday November 13, 9 AM - 5 PM at the Quaker Meetinghouse 15th Street (at 15 Rutherford Place) between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Manhattan. Publications: - Boston University's "Peer Support/Peer Provided Services Underlying Processes, Benefits, and Critical Ingredients", authored by Dr Phyllis Solomon and published in the Spring 2004 issue of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal provides a comprehensive analysis of both the processes and benefits of peer support/provided services. - Newsweek has published an article "Dealing with Depression". The article looks at mental health issues at schools including suicide and litigation. New York University is highlighted with four student suicides at NYU during the school year 2003-2004. - Social Security Administration has posted a paper entitled "The Effectiveness of Medicaid Buy-in Programs in Promoting the Employment of People with Disabilities". - Vanderbilt University Press has published Nora Jacobson's new book "In Recovery: The Making of Mental Health Policy". This publication draws on Ms. Jacobson's research in Wisconsin, a state with a long history of innovation in mental health services. The term "recovery" and "recovery-oriented system" are defined.
