our seminars: Employment Specialist Training and Technical Assistance

Comprehensive new educational sessions designed for Supported Employment Providers assisting persons recovering from mental illness.

This is an opportunity to obtain the specialized skills and knowledge required to assist individuals with psychiatric disabilities attain and sustain employment. The program is made possible through a grant from the New York State Education Department, Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID).

Topics covered include:

  • Principles and practices of supported employment and evidence-based practice
  • Myths and realities of mental illness and employment
  • The role of the Employment Specialist
  • Effective tools for situational and ongoing assessment
  • Best-practice job development strategies and employer relations
  • Creative job retention strategies
  • Workers' rights, the ADA and disclosure issues for individuals with psychiatric disabilities
  • Specialized needs of persons with multiple barriers including homelessness and forensic issues
  • The role of clinical supports in rehabilitation

These workshops support the IAPSRS/USPRA trainingrequirements for Certified Psychiatric RehabilitationPractitioners (CPRP) and CRC continuing educationcredits.

About the trainers from the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI), UMass, Boston:

Joy Orzechowski-Gould, B.A. has over ten years ofexperience in workforce development andemployment training. Her background includes jobdevelopment for people with significant barriers toemployment and the design and implementation ofcustomized training programs for employers.

Amy Gelb, M.S. has a Master of Science degree in HumanResource Counseling. She has experience in the mentalhealth supported employment sector working as a jobdeveloper, program manager, and job/educational coach.Amy has been the host of an employment radio show,interviewing employers and educators in the Boston area.

All workshops will be held at the New York Work Exchange, Coalition of Voluntary Mental Health Agencies, in our conference room at 90 Broad St., 8th floor.
