The NY Work Exchange and our sister agencies throughout the city and state sponsor numerous training opportunities during the year. In agreement with the agencies listed below, we are pleased to post trainings as a service to the mental health community. The trainings are open to all individuals who wish to increase their knowledge about employment services and other issues of importance to the field.

Trainings are listed in chronological order and indicate the sponsoring agency. Please call the sponsoring agency for more information about the course and to register. The NY Work Exchange cannot accept registrations for any course offered by another agency.

Supporting Career Development and Employment: The Role of the Social Security Administration and Benefits Practitioners in Supporting Effective Employment Outcomes for People with Disabilities

This unique training opportunity is intended to support practitioners in understanding disability and return to work programs administered by the Social Security Administration and how to best provide benefits planning and assistance services and supports. This in-depth training is open to mental health employment program staff (new to benefits counseling or experts) who assist consumers in navigating the Social Security benefits system while returning to work.

Part II will offer effective strategies for providing benefits planning, assistance and outreach as a core service. Participants will learn to identify strategies for effective communication and support planning, demonstrate knowledge of the new work incentives and employment safety nets created by the Ticket to Work Program, and learn how to support a beneficiary exploring, engaging or advancing in employment.

Integration of Employment and Clinical Services

This one-day training is designed for clinical staff to support the integration of employment into clinical practice with customers of behavioral health services. Attitudes, values and strategies for creating a culture that supports work will be explored. Participants will learn about significant policies, trends and barriers affecting people with mental illness and work, the range of employment supports and services that are available and their relative effectiveness, as well as strategies to overcome barriers to employment. In addition, participants will acquire specific tools that promote recovery through the support of meaningful work experiences with customers in their clinical practice.
